A picture of stranded patients' at KATH
The strike by health workers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has entered its fourth day, leaving patients who have travelled from different parts of the country stranded at the facility.
The prolonged industrial action continues to disrupt services at Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital.
The strike, which began on Saturday, June 6, 2026, stems from concerns surrounding the suspension of KATH’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, along with other unresolved issues raised by staff.
Although critically ill patients and those already on admission continue to receive attention, most Out-Patient Department (OPD) services have stalled, affecting consultations, reviews, and routine medical care.

At the centre of the disruption are ordinary patients who say they have nowhere else to turn to.
One family that travelled from Zebilla in the Upper East Region said they were left devastated after arriving for a scheduled medical review, only to discover that health workers were still on strike.
“We were transferred from the north two weeks ago and came all the way from Zebilla. When we arrived, my relative was attended to, laboratory tests were done, and we were given medication and asked to return today for a review. Unfortunately, we arrived only to meet the strike. We are currently staying at my aunt’s place in Asawase, and our presence is putting financial pressure on her. It is very frustrating,” the relative said.
Another patient from Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region described her confusion and helplessness after missing a follow-up appointment related to a breast condition.
“My church supported me financially to come to the hospital. My breast is swollen. I came here two weeks ago. I was asked to return today. I came from Akyem Oda. I don’t know whether to return or wait here, I don’t know anybody around,” she said.
Despite attempts by government officials to persuade the striking workers to resume duty, the impasse remains unresolved.
The workers insist they will only return to work after receiving clear feedback from the Ministry of Health and the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, concerning the suspension of Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo.
