Relentless heavy rainfalls across the country have wreaked havoc in several communities, submerging properties and severely disrupting daily life. The destructive patterns, which typically characterize the peak of the wet season, appear to have heavily impacted residential areas and commercial hubs alike.

While reports of drowning have fortunately not been widespread this year, tragedy struck in Accra when a man was reportedly swept away by strong water currents. Witnesses state the victim was attempting to desilt a choked gutter during the downpour when the flash floods overwhelmed him.

Historically, flood disasters have primarily devastated the capital city of Accra. However, recent trends show that the crisis has expanded its geographical reach. Other territories, most notably the Ashanti Region, are now reporting similar catastrophic occurrences, proving that urban flooding has evolved into a nationwide emergency.

This widespread devastation persists despite ongoing mitigation efforts. Interventions by the government, alongside highly publicized community sanitation drives by private volunteer groups like the Buzz Stop Boys, have targeted choked drains.

Furthermore, the state has executed demolition exercises at the Ramsar sites and other critical waterlogged areas to restore natural waterways.

Nevertheless, these measures have done little to tame the deluge. The latest rains have once again left several communities heavily flooded, severely damaged public infrastructure, and completely paralyzed vehicular and pedestrian movement.

Below are some of the areas affected:

1.Teshie-Nungua Estates (Coffee Street)

Residents of Teshie-Nungua Estates, particularly around Coffee Street, have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the bridge linking the community to Mandela Junction. Following the recent rains, residents say the bridge has become increasingly unsafe and are calling on the Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, Benjamin Ayiku Narteh, to intervene before a disaster occurs.

2.Tema Communities

Several communities in Tema, including Communities 5, 16, 19 Annex, 20 and 22, experienced flooding after the downpour. Residents reported submerged roads and homes, with some areas becoming difficult to access due to rising floodwaters.

3.Lashibi, Klagon and Borteyman

Floodwaters also affected parts of Lashibi, Klagon and Borteyman, causing disruptions to traffic and daily activities. Residents have repeatedly complained about poor drainage systems in these communities whenever there is heavy rainfall.

4. Sakumono and Adjei Kojo Parts of Sakumono and Adjei Kojo were not spared by the rains. Flooded roads and waterlogged neighbourhoods left residents stranded in some sections as drainage channels struggled to contain the volume of water.

4.Accra-Tema Motorway

A tragic incident occurred on the Accra-Tema Motorway near the underbridge after a tipper truck collided with a fuel tanker, triggering a massive fire outbreak. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service managed to bring the blaze under control, but reports indicate that at least one person lost their life while others sustained injuries.

5.Ashaiman and parts of Accra

Communities including Ashaiman, Kaneshie, Circle, Pantang, Lakeside, Agbogba-Ashongman and Ashaley Botwe also experienced varying degrees of flooding. The heavy rains disrupted movement and affected businesses in several of these areas.

6.Asafo Market, Kumasi

In the Ashanti Region, traders at Asafo Market woke up to flooded stalls and submerged roads after the morning rainfall. Large sections of the market and surrounding areas were covered by floodwaters, affecting commercial activities.

The latest floods have renewed concerns over drainage challenges, unauthorised construction on waterways and poor sanitation practices, with many residents calling on authorities to implement long-term flood control measures before the peak of the rainy season.
