Government Statistician, Alhassan Iddrissu, has cautioned that rising food prices could undermine Ghana's recent inflation gains if measures are not taken to strengthen the country's food production and distribution systems.

His comments come at a time when Ghana continues to record one of its lowest inflation rates in recent years, raising hopes of improved economic stability and purchasing power for households.

Although inflation has fallen significantly from 23.5% in January 2025 to 3.7% in May 2026, Dr Iddrissu noted that recent data points to a slight upward trend after months of consistent decline.

Speaking on JoyNews on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, he attributed the increase largely to food-related price pressures and called for sustained government intervention to keep inflation under control.

"The recent increase in inflation is largely being driven by food prices. If we want to sustain the gains we have made, then we must continue to invest in food systems, storage facilities, irrigation and transportation infrastructure," he stated.

According to him, improving the efficiency of the agricultural value chain will be critical in preventing future price shocks and ensuring food remains affordable across the country.

Iddrissu also stressed the need to address disparities in market access between regions, arguing that uneven distribution networks often contribute to price differences and inflationary pressures.

"We also need to tackle regional inequalities in market access because these gaps can affect the movement of food and ultimately influence prices across the country," he explained.

He further urged authorities to maintain fiscal discipline to safeguard the progress made in reducing inflation over the past year.
