The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ashanti Region has threatened to boycott academic activities and disrupt the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the arrest of a teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

According to the union, the teacher has been wrongly portrayed as a culprit in a viral video where he had engaged in a physical altercation with a female student that led to his arrest.

In a video shared by Asaase radio on June 10, 2026, a representative of the union said their investigations showed that the teacher did not commit any wrongdoing.

“Our colleague teacher committed no wrongdoing. The video that has since gone viral has portrayed him as a bad person and a culprit, but that isn't what it seems. There is an order from above directing that the teacher who has been arrested shouldn't be given bail. The people who gave the order should come to the Nyinahin community and make their own investigations from the school authorities,” he said in Twi.

The union warned that teachers in the district would withdraw their services if the teacher was not released.

“We, as a teacher union, will not sit aloof. We are really concerned together with our district Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) chairman. From tomorrow, no teacher in this district will go to school. We are all going to be in red attire. If due to our boycott, the English paper in the ongoing WASSCE is cancelled, they shouldn't hold us responsible,” he stated.

The group said the matter affects the entire teaching profession and must not be treated as an isolated case.

“If they have done this to our colleague teacher, then it can happen to any of us. If you touch one, you touch all. We are demanding for the release of our colleague teacher or else the upcoming WASSCE papers at the Nyinahin college, we will not allow the students to sit for them. And if they don't sit for the paper, nobody should be blamed,” he added.

The union further claimed that its own investigation contradicted the public perception created by the viral video.

According to the teachers, the female student involved in the incident has also appealed for the teacher's release.

“Our colleague is innocent. Initially, when we saw the video, we went with the narrative everyone believed, but when we came to the school to conduct our own investigations, we realised the teacher did no wrongdoing and even the female student who fought with him in the video is begging for forgiveness and asking for the teacher's release,” the union representative added.

The teacher, a staff member of the Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, was arrested by the Ghana Police Service after the incident went viral.

Meanwhile, Daniel Fenyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has disclosed that the regional education directorate has begun investigations into the matter.
