The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has issued a strong warning to developers, contractors, and the general public that no concrete works should begin on any construction project without proper verification of the excavation and foundation stages by qualified engineers.

The caution was made during a press briefing held by the Institution on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

According to Michael Obeng Konadu, the Chair of Civil Division of Ghana Institution of Engineering, skipping professional verification at these critical early stages poses serious risks to structural integrity and public safety.

He emphasised that qualified assembly engineers must inspect and approve excavation and foundation works before any concrete is poured.

“We call for strict enforcement of stage-by-stage inspections. No concrete works should proceed without verification of excavation and foundation stages by qualified assembly engineers,” he stressed.

This latest warning comes amid growing concerns over building collapses and substandard construction practices across the country.

The Institution called on all stakeholders, including metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, to strictly enforce these safety protocols.
