Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Akwasi Opong-Fosu
The Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Akwasi Opong-Fosu, says he is engaging key stakeholders of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he considers contesting for a leadership position ahead of the party’s National Congress.
The congress, scheduled for December 19, 2026, is expected to elect a new National Executive Committee following regional elections slated for November.
Speaking on his ongoing engagements, Opong-Fosu said the consultations, which have been ongoing for the past two months, are focused on the future direction of the NDC and the type of leadership needed to strengthen the party ahead of future electoral contests.
According to him, discussions with party members, grassroots supporters, and other stakeholders have centred on rebuilding confidence in the party, deepening grassroots participation, strengthening internal cohesion, and positioning the NDC for long-term political success.

His public service career includes serving as District Secretary and District Chief Executive between 1982 and 2000, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development from 2000 to 2001, and Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under former President John Dramani Mahama.
He also served as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and represented the Amenfi East Constituency in Parliament from 2013 to 2017.
Beyond his national assignments, he has held international leadership roles, including President of the Africa Union of Local Authorities and Chairman of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Local Government Platform.
He currently serves as Board Chairman of the GIPC, the state agency responsible for promoting and facilitating investment into the Ghanaian economy.
He is also involved in policy and development work through organisations such as Africa Growth Solutions and the Africa Global Emergence Center.
For now, the GIPC Board Chair said he will continue engaging stakeholders across the party before making a final decision on whether to enter the race, adding that a formal announcement will follow the conclusion of consultations.
