Michael Oti Adjei is a sports journalist
Sports journalist Michael Oti Adjei has urged journalists to stop blaming bloggers for dominating major events and instead adopt a more proactive and disciplined approach to their work.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, Oti Adjei said many journalists often complain about bloggers taking over prime positions at high-profile events, yet fail to put in the extra effort required to secure those opportunities themselves.
Re-invent yourself - Oti Adjei to sports journalists
“Every journalist now is complaining that there's so much focus on bloggers. I was at the Kirush press conference. The bloggers arrived three, four hours earlier. They took the front spots. The journalists were walking in like they own the place. And then they would still go and complain. No. Go in,” he said.
According to him, dedication and preparation are what often separate successful media practitioners from others in the industry.
The seasoned broadcaster disclosed that he left home as early as 6 a.m. on the day of the event just to secure a good position, even though the unveiling itself was scheduled for 1 p.m.
“I left my house at 6 a.m. By 6:45 a.m., I was seated there. I didn't leave till three o'clock,” he stated.
Oti Adjei explained that his decision to arrive early was intentional because he anticipated competition for space at the venue.
“We were doing New Day from there, Sports Daily there at ten. Sports Daily ends at eleven. Eleven to one, and I knew there would be a fight over the spot. So I went the previous day to check it,” he added.
Beyond journalism, he also shared personal lessons on discipline, sacrifice, and financial prudence, attributing much of his mindset to advice from his mother.
“Wake up early. It's a simple rule. Wake up early,” he stressed.
He further advised young people against living beyond their means, revealing that he often flies economy class and waits for cheaper upgrade opportunities instead of paying for business class outright.
“Anything you don't have the luxury of doing with your own money casually, don't force yourself to. Me, I don't have money for business class, so I buy economy tickets,” he said.
