The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has appointed Colonel K S Appiah as its new Director of Operations, taking over from Colonel Dominic Buah.

The handing-over ceremony took place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, with officials describing the transition as a move to enhance operational efficiency and sustain gains made in the country's anti-galamsey campaign.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the occasion represented more than the transfer of office equipment and responsibilities.

"What is being handed over today is not merely offices, equipment and operational responsibilities. It is a national mission to protect Ghana's rivers, forests, mineral wealth and ultimately the future of our country," he said.

He noted that illegal mining had evolved into a highly organised, mobile and well-financed threat by the time the current administration assumed office, placing immense pressure on water bodies, forest reserves and public confidence.

Despite the challenges, he said significant progress had been made through the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and the dedication of personnel engaged in the fight against illegal mining.

"Much of the progress we have made is due to the sacrifices and commitment of officers who have risked their lives under difficult and dangerous conditions to safeguard our natural resources," he stated.

Buah paid tribute to the outgoing NAIMOS team led by Colonel Buah, commending its role in laying a strong foundation for the anti-galamsey campaign.

He urged the incoming team to strengthen intelligence gathering, embrace innovation and uphold the highest standards of integrity.

"I charge the new leadership under Colonel K. S. Appiah to build on these gains, deepen collaboration with stakeholders and remain steadfast in the mission to protect our environment," the minister said.

In his farewell remarks, outgoing Director of Operations Colonel Dominic Buah described his one-year tenure, which began in June 2025, as both challenging and rewarding.

Reflecting on the period, he highlighted what he said were major achievements in disrupting illegal mining networks and supporting the recovery of degraded ecosystems.

"Our operations have significantly disrupted illegal mining activities and contributed to the gradual recovery of some degraded water bodies and forest reserves," he said.

Colonel Buah also offered advice to his successor, stressing the need for discipline, transparency and adherence to the rule of law.

"Remain firm, transparent, objective and disciplined. Sustained operations and strict adherence to the rule of law will be critical if we are to win this fight," he advised.

Taking over the mantle, Colonel Appiah pledged to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration and intensify efforts to protect Ghana's natural resources.

"I am grateful for the confidence reposed in me. I will work with the team to build on the strong operational foundation that has been laid and intensify efforts to protect our rivers, forests and mineral resources," he said.

He also commended his predecessor for his leadership and dedication, assuring stakeholders of his commitment to advancing NAIMOS' mandate in the fight against illegal mining.
