Hugo Broos under fire after South Africa’s poor show against Mexico

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has come under heavy criticisms following the team’s 2-0 loss to Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2026.

The host nation largely dominated the game, with the South African side showing little attacking threat due to their defensive approach, ultimately ending the game with a defeat.

Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored the two goals for Mexico to secure three points in Group A, in a match that was marred by controversial incidents.

Many fans and pundits argued that this approach deprived the midfield and attack of sufficient numbers to create danger in the final third.

Others expressed huge disappointment in his management of the game, noting that the system he deployed was unfamiliar to most of the players, preventing them from thriving and playing at their best.
