Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has come under heavy criticisms following the team’s 2-0 loss to Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2026.

The host nation largely dominated the game, with the South African side showing little attacking threat due to their defensive approach, ultimately ending the game with a defeat.

Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored the two goals for Mexico to secure three points in Group A, in a match that was marred by controversial incidents.

South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off for reckless play, while Mexico’s César Montes also received a red card for a similar challenge.

After the game, Broos was blamed for the defeat, with critics pointing to his defensive strategy of starting five defenders.

Many fans and pundits argued that this approach deprived the midfield and attack of sufficient numbers to create danger in the final third.

Others expressed huge disappointment in his management of the game, noting that the system he deployed was unfamiliar to most of the players, preventing them from thriving and playing at their best.

Social media was filled with resentment and backlash of Broos, with many insisting he is not up to the task at the world stage.

South Africa will take on Czech Republic in their game in group A with the hope of securing a victory.
