Sam George clarifies laptops were sponsorship prizes, not a donation to Parliament
The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has clarified that he did not personally donate laptops to Parliament as widely reported, describing a recent media publication as misleading.
The Minister’s response follows a social media post that circulated a news card from Metro TV bearing the headline, “Samuel Nartey George donates laptop to Parliament.”
Reacting to the report on his X account on June 12, 2026, Sam George rejected the characterization of the initiative and explained that the laptops in question were not intended for Parliament as an institution.
According to him, the laptops form part of a sponsorship package under the “Parliament and You” programme, an educational initiative organized in collaboration with Junior Graphic to engage and educate young people.
He explained that the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations serves as the lead sponsor of the programme, which features a two-year competition for schoolchildren.
As part of the sponsorship arrangement, his Ministry provides laptops as prizes for quarterly winners of the competition.
“I did NOT donate laptops to Parliament. The news report from @metrotvgh is misleading. The @MoCDTI is the lead sponsor for the Parliament and You program targeting young kids in collaboration with Junior Graphic. There is a 2 year competition and the Ministry is providing laptops for every quarterly winner as our sponsorship. Thanks,” he wrote.
The clarification comes amid reports that the Minister had donated 10 laptops to Parliament as part of efforts to improve digital efficiency within the legislative arm of government.
According to those reports, the presentation of the laptops took place on April 8, 2026, at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra. The donation was said to be part of the Ministry’s broader agenda to strengthen digital infrastructure and help bridge technology gaps across public institutions.
The reports further indicated that parliamentary officials who received the laptops on behalf of Parliament expressed appreciation for the support and assured the Ministry that the devices would be used for their intended purpose of enhancing parliamentary work and improving operational efficiency.
