The Tema Motorway Interchange is a critical link connecting Tema, Accra, and other parts of Ghana
The Tema Motorway has long been in the spotlight for its deplorable condition riddled with potholes, plagued by unusual traffic congestion, and marred by frequent accidents.
Many have described it as a “death trap,” with lives lost due to both reckless driving and the dangerous state of the road.
In recent years, some sections of the motorway have been patched, while ongoing construction works have brought partial relief.
The Tema Motorway Interchange, a critical link connecting Tema, Accra, and other parts of Ghana, was also asphalted as part of these improvements. However, fresh concerns have surfaced.
Visible cracks have appeared on the newly asphalted portion of the interchange along the Afienya–Akosombo stretch, a report by Daily Graphic has shown.
Motorists and pedestrians alike are alarmed, questioning the durability of the project and warning of the grave risks it poses.
Residents and commuters are also calling on relevant authorities to urgently investigate and address the issue before it escalates into a disaster.
It would be recalled that the first phase of the Tema Motorway Interchange, converted from a roundabout into a modern interchange, was officially opened to traffic on May 16, 2020.
In December 2024, phase two of the project, featuring a high-quality steel girder bridge linking Tema to the Akosombo stretch was inaugurated.
Yet, despite these milestones, the cracks now appearing threaten to undermine public confidence in the project’s safety and longevity.
