A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Ellen Ama Daaku has recounted an alleged baby theft plot she says she narrowly escaped while preparing to give birth at a private hospital about 14 years ago.

Speaking on Adom Dwaso Nsem and monitored by GhanaWeb on June 14, 2026, Daaku claimed a nurse at the facility discreetly warned her two months before her due date to ensure that a close relative remained by her side throughout the delivery process.

According to her, she informed her mother about the warning, and her mother stayed with her throughout her time at the hospital.

Daaku said her suspicions were heightened after she safely delivered her baby and a nurse offered to take the newborn away for a bath.

“After a safe delivery, one of the nurses said she was going to bathe the baby, but my mother insisted and said no, she would do it herself when we were discharged,” she recounted.

She said that after returning home, she visited the hospital again to thank the nurse who had cautioned her. During their conversation, the nurse allegedly revealed that someone had deposited a large sum of money in search of a healthy baby.

“I asked her why she gave me such information and, to my surprise, she disclosed that someone had deposited a huge amount of money—50,000 cedis—for a healthy baby, a baby whose mother had taken very good care of herself,” Daaku alleged.

She further claimed that baby theft schemes are not limited to lower-tier health facilities but can occur across different levels of society, including high-end private hospitals.

“Things are going on across hospitals,” she said, suggesting that such activities may be more widespread than many people realise.

Her comments come against the backdrop of the ongoing missing newborn case in Salaga, where the Savannah Regional Health Directorate has confirmed that a baby disappeared from the East Gonja District Hospital on June 10, 2026.

The matter has been referred to the police, while health authorities have launched parallel investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case has attracted national attention, with police questioning hospital staff and reports indicating that two midwives have been remanded in connection with the investigation.
