The Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has assured traders and residents in the municipality of a major economic transformation following the commencement of work on the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Market Project at Elubo in the Western Region.

The Deputy Transport Minister made the remarks during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the market, which forms part of the government’s broader 24-Hour Economy agenda aimed at creating jobs, boosting trade, and expanding economic opportunities across the country.

The event was attended by the Jomoro Municipal Chief Executive, Benedict Boadi, executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, Awulae Kwasi Armachie III, and residents of the municipality.

According to Madam Affo-Toffey, the project demonstrates the commitment of President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to transforming local economies through strategic infrastructure investments.

“This landmark project is a clear demonstration of the commitment of President John Dramani Mahama and the government to delivering jobs, expanding economic opportunities, and transforming communities through the 24-Hour Economy agenda,” she stated.

The MP noted that Elubo’s strategic location as a border town with neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire positions it to benefit significantly from the project.

“We share a border with Côte d’Ivoire. It will expand Elubo and bring more jobs. It is a game changer that is expected to bring about more development,” she said.

Madam Affo-Toffey also highlighted the anticipated benefits of the market for women traders, describing them as the backbone of many households. She explained that the 24-hour operational model would provide greater flexibility, enabling women to balance their economic activities with family responsibilities.

The Deputy Minister disclosed that the facility would be a modern market complex similar in concept to the renowned Kejetia Market in Kumasi. She said the project would feature a range of supporting facilities, including a daycare centre, a women’s bank, a clinic, and a fire station, among others.

Addressing the gathering, Awulae Kwasi Armachie III urged residents to unite behind the project and prioritize development over divisions.

“We should put aside the litigation and look for development for Jomoro and Ghana. Litigation is unhelpful because many people have already experienced its ineffectiveness, so we must unite and support this development agenda,” he said.

The 24-Hour Economy Market Project is expected to serve as a major commercial hub in the municipality, enhancing cross-border trade, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the area.
