Tunisia suffered a humiliating defeat in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, losing 5-1 to Sweden in their opening Group F encounter at Estadio Monterrey on June 14, 2026.

A brilliant goal from Yasin Ayari inspired a dominant Swedish performance that set the tone for their tournament and inflicted a heavy defeat on the North Africans, who struggled defensively.

Sweden signalled its attacking intent from the opening minutes and came close to breaking the deadlock in the seventh. Viktor Gyökeres reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area and fired a low effort towards goal, only for a Tunisian defender to produce a remarkable clearance off the line.

The pressure eventually paid off when Ayari opened the scoring. The midfielder collected a loose ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a stunning strike into the top-right corner, giving Sweden a deserved lead.

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak netted a brace, while Gyökeres and Mattias Svanberg added further goals to seal the 5-1 victory. Omar Rekik’s strike was not enough for Tunisia, who began the tournament in disastrous fashion.

After the first round of matches in Group F, Sweden leads with three points. Japan and the Netherlands follow with a point each after their 1-1 draw, while Tunisia sits at the bottom with zero points.
