The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Canada to support Black Stars
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to attend a public watch party in Toronto on June 17, 2026, as Ghana takes on Panama in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The event, organised by Tribe Culturefest as part of its #FWC26Tribe campaign, will be held at Sankofa Square in downtown Toronto and is expected to attract members of the Ghanaian community, football fans, cultural groups and visitors from across the Greater Toronto Area.
In addition to the live screening of the match, organisers have scheduled cultural performances, music, food exhibitions and other activities aimed at highlighting Ghanaian culture and heritage.
Black Stars' World Cup outreach event becomes talking point
The attendance of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is expected to add significance to the gathering, which organisers say will serve as an opportunity to celebrate both Ghana's participation in the World Cup and the contributions of the Ghanaian diaspora in Canada.
The event will take place at Sankofa Square, formerly known as Yonge-Dundas Square. The site was renamed in 2023 after the Akan concept "Sankofa," which encourages learning from the past while building for the future.
The renaming was widely seen as recognition of the contributions of African and Black communities to Toronto's multicultural identity.
Kristin Gyimah, Chief Operating Officer of Tribe Culturefest, said the venue's connection to Ghanaian heritage makes it an appropriate location for the gathering.
"Sankofa Square is more than a destination; it is a symbol of cultural recognition and shared history. To celebrate Ghana's World Cup journey in a space that proudly carries a Ghanaian name is deeply meaningful," she said.
Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the event, which will combine football viewing with cultural activities showcasing Ghanaian traditions, music and cuisine.
The watch party forms part of a series of events being organised around the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is being hosted across Canada, the United States and Mexico.
