Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed suggestions that the government played any role in the resignation of the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) responsible for Corporate Affairs, Dr Bossman Asare.

His comments come amid public debate and speculation that Dr Asare’s departure may have been influenced by political pressure, following earlier remarks by some political figures.

Speaking on Citi FM on June 15, 2026, Kwakye Ofosu maintained that the resignation was entirely voluntary and carried out in accordance with established procedures.

He explained that the legal provisions governing the exit or removal of Electoral Commission members are clearly defined, stressing that those processes were not triggered in this instance.

According to him, any attempt by a government to remove an EC commissioner must go through strict constitutional steps, and he referenced past situations where such procedures were properly followed.

He further indicated that Dr Bossman Asare personally informed President John Dramani Mahama of his decision to leave office upon the completion of his tenure.

“First of all, there is no basis for giving any assurance because nothing of that sort has happened. The process for removing a member of the Commission is clearly spelt out by law.

“Dr Bossman Asare himself, of his own volition, wrote to the President indicating his desire to leave at the appointed date, and that is what happened,” he stated.

The Minister also noted that consultations are underway to appoint a successor, in line with the constitutional and legal requirements governing the Electoral Commission.
