In interviews with GhanaWeb TV, residents shared their struggles finding affordable housing, highlighting the financial burden imposed not only by landlords but also by middlemen who often charge fees before prospective tenants can even inspect a property.

For many house seekers, the challenge extends beyond the cost of rent itself. Some complain that agents demand payments upfront, only to show properties that do not meet expectations or are no longer available.

"We are tired of agents taking our money, and so if GhanaWeb Real Estate can help us, then we will support them," one respondent said.

The growing dissatisfaction has led some residents to call for a more structured and transparent real estate system to bridge the gap between property owners and prospective tenants and to reduce the influence of unscrupulous agents.

Another respondent suggested that any housing platform introduced should work closely with legitimate agents to ensure credibility and efficiency.

"I suggest GhanaWeb should include the various agents in the real estate platform," the respondent stated.

Others recounted experiences of being charged fees before they were even shown available accommodation, describing the practice as unfair and burdensome, especially at a time when many households are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

"Sometimes the agents take a moving fee before they even show us the room," another respondent lamented.

Despite their concerns, several residents expressed optimism about initiatives that could make the house-hunting process easier and more trustworthy. However, they stressed that transparency and honesty would be key to winning public confidence.

"If the GhanaWeb Real Estate platform is going to be truthful to us and not deceive us, then we will accept it in good faith," one respondent said.

The concerns raised by residents reflect the broader housing challenges confronting many urban dwellers, where increasing rent prices, advance payment demands, and agent-related fees continue to make access to decent accommodation difficult.

As conversations around housing affordability intensify, many Ghanaians are hoping for practical solutions that will make searching for accommodation less stressful, more transparent, and financially accessible.
