The Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, has stated that she cannot guarantee a complete solution to Ghana's unemployment challenges, urging young people to be focused on their goals and never underestimate their potential.

Speaking to students of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Parliament, the legislator acknowledged the persistent nature of unemployment in Ghana, noting that successive governments have struggled to address the problem fully.

She, however, encouraged students to take personal responsibility for their choices and career paths.

“Currently, even previous governments couldn’t solve unemployment issues. I cannot come and guarantee you 100% solutions for unemployment. But the majority of it depends on us, the choices and paths we want to take,” she said.

Drawing from her journey, Millicent Yeboah Amankwah recounted how she remained committed to her political ambitions from a young age and worked towards achieving them.

According to her, she was determined to become a Member of Parliament long before completing her education and consistently shared that ambition with her peers.

“I didn’t wait to complete school and then look for work for years before becoming a Member of Parliament. I decided while in senior high school that right after school, I would go and contest to become our Member of Parliament.

“When I got to the university, I told members of my class and even people in the party that when I completed school, I would contest against our Member of Parliament. He’s my father’s classmate,” she noted.

Her remarks come at a time when unemployment is still a major concern for many Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

According to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2026, unemployment and the lack of economic opportunities could pose Ghana’s biggest risk in 2026, despite signs of easing short-term price pressures.

The report further identified technological disruption and inadequate public services, including infrastructure deficits, as other significant risks facing the country.
