A man has reportedly been shot dead during an anti-illegal mining operation at Salman in the Amenfi West District of the Western Region.

Officials of the Ghana Police Service have indicated that investigations have commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to a reporter on Angel FM, personnel from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) were conducting a patrol at illegal mining sites in the area as part of efforts to curb unlawful mining activities.

“The NAIMOS patrol was at the illegal mining sites ensuring that people stop engaging in the activity,” the reporter said.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, June 14, 2026, when the patrol team visited one of the mining concessions in the area.

“On Sunday, they went on the run at one of the concessions. It was during that period that gunshots were fired, and one person was killed,” the reporter disclosed.

Preliminary information gathered by the reporter suggests that some individuals at the site attempted to flee upon seeing the anti-galamsey team.

“Upon my investigations, the people, upon seeing the people of NAIMOS, got scared and started leaving the site,” he stated.

According to the account, the patrol team allegedly pursued the fleeing individuals on a motorbike after becoming suspicious of their actions.

“The NAIMOS people did not understand why they were leaving, so they picked a motorbike and chased them,” the reporter explained.

The chase reportedly continued for about 500 metres from the concession before shots were fired.

“About 500 metres away from the concession, one of the numerous shots got one of the men and killed him,” the reporter alleged.

Police officers have since visited the scene as part of efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

“The police have come to view the incident,” the reporter said.

The District Chief Executive for the area has also been informed and is reported to have visited the scene.

“The District Chief Executive has been informed and they have come to the scene,” he added.

The deceased’s body has since been deposited at a mortuary pending further investigations.

“As it stands now, the body has been deposited in the mortuary,” the reporter noted.

The reporter further indicated that the deceased was not a native of Salman but had reportedly been residing in a nearby community for approximately six months before the incident.

Investigations are expected to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
