A man has recounted how he narrowly escaped a suspected kidnapping attempt in Tema after a private car he boarded developed what he later believed was a staged fault in a dark area around Datus in Tema Community 7.

Speaking in a video shared on social media by We Love Ghana on June 17, 2026, the victim said he boarded a private vehicle from Community 8 to Community 1 but quickly became suspicious of the driver’s behaviour.

"It was not a taxi, it was more like a private car, usually when I sit in a car, I press my phone, but this time, the driver was acting strange, so I put my phone in my pocket, and I was just looking at him. He was behaving as if, the car had a fault, we were around Starbites", he narrated.

According to him, the journey took a concerning turn when the driver stopped near the Starbites area and moved towards Datus, a stretch he described as poorly lit and unsafe at night.

"Everyone who knows the Datus area, knows it is very dark. It was after midnight, and the whole place was very dark, there were no cars approaching he recounted.

Moments later, he said he spotted two men approaching the vehicle, which immediately heightened his alarm.

“The driver got down from the car and said it had developed a fault. I also alighted from the car, but he told me to get inside, but I was adamant, I was not feeling good about it. When I saw two guys coming towards me, I just ran. I got to the junction, and I saw a taxi driver, I was even shivering,” he said.

The man said he managed to escape without harm, warning commuters to be cautious when boarding private vehicles.
