Minority Leader in parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has commended the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, for personally visiting road project sites to monitor ongoing works, describing the move as the right approach to leadership.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on June 17, 2026, Afenyo-Markin said he was impressed after seeing videos of the minister visiting project sites and engaging contractors over delayed road works.

"We saw you on social media, and what you were doing was right because some of these things, they do it, and in the end, they say you, the minister, are not competent,” he said.

"You have been leaving your office and going to the field, I must be honest, I was impressed. I was impressed because that is the right thing to do as a minister," he said.

Afenyo-Markin noted that ministers are often blamed for poor project execution and therefore need to take a direct interest in monitoring ongoing works and holding contractors accountable.

Despite the commendation, Afenyo-Markin maintained that Parliament has a responsibility to demand accountability over stalled and delayed road projects.

He said legislators must continue to seek clarification on projects that appear abandoned or are progressing at a slow pace.

He also cited concerns about contractors who have received mobilisation funds but are yet to return to site.

Afenyo-Markin specifically raised concerns about the slow pace of work on the Swedru-Winneba Road, describing it as a major route to the Central Region.

He indicated that he would file an appropriate question at the right time to seek further explanations on the project's status.

Afenyo-Markin, however, stressed that commendation and criticism are both part of democratic oversight.

"We are here as political actors, minority, majority. It is all for the good of democracy. When the man does it well, we must commend him," he said.
