Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has finally addressed rumours about his alleged death, dismissing them as politically motivated falsehoods.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on GhanaWeb TV's The Lowdown on June 18, 2026, Ampaw explained that the rumours were linked to his earlier comments about the health of Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, which he claimed some opponents found uncomfortable.

'I am alive' – Maurice Ampaw speaks amid death rumours

“It is a political wish... you know I spoke about the vice president’s health and I was talking about the need to take precautionary measures just to avoid vice presidents always dying on their job and then the opponent didn't find it comfortable so they decided to create this fake news,” he disclosed in the interview.

Ampaw said he initially chose not to respond.

“ I didn't want it to get to me… I saw it like a joke and I know where the whole thing is coming from. So, I smile at the storm and the only people that I was very worried and I quickly let them know I'm alive was my mom who’s almost 90 years,” he said.

He added that his children were with him when the rumours started to spread, and they were shocked to see reports claiming their father had died.

“My kids, were with me. So, when they saw the news; they were like ‘Daddy, they said you are dead.’ Those who [wanted confirmation] would know because it is my family who will disclose my death or somebody closer to me,” Ampaw added.

Ampaw says the rumours were not only false but politically motivated, linked to his earlier remarks about the health of Ghana’s vice president.
