Samuel Atta-Akyea is lead counsel for Wontumi
Samuel Atta Akyea, the lead counsel for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has asked the Accra High Court for an extension of time to file his written address in the Samreboi illegal mining case.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on July 17, 2026, he said additional time is needed to properly complete and file the written submissions that will guide the court in its determination of the matter.
Ken Agyapong asked Wontumi about GH¢30 million Exim Bank saga - Kwarteng
"I will plead with the court for that because if you want to have a fair trial, and if you want our input as part of the thinking of the judge, I believe they should allow time so that we will be able to do what is necessary," he added.
Wontumi and his co-accused are facing charges related to illegal mining activities at Samreboi, including allegations of unlawfully assigning mineral rights without ministerial approval.
Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, are standing trial over allegations of facilitating mining activities on the Samreboi concession without ministerial approval, contrary to the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).
At the end of proceedings, the court directed parties who wished to file written addresses to do so on or before June 17, 2026.
The trial has concluded, and the court had set July 3, 2026, for judgment.
