Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has taken to Instagram to criticise Portugal’s performance after their World Cup opener against Congo, questioning the team’s lack of attacking fluency in a frustrating start to the 2026 campaign.

Katia Aveiro did not hold back in her post, suggesting Portugal appeared to lose their usual sharpness in key phases of play.

She highlighted what she saw as a lack of passing intensity, defensive bite, and quick counter-attacking transitions.

“Magically, they forgot how to pass the ball around, win the ball back, and launch counter-attacks. The game became all about passing backwards in midfield. Strange World Cup. Very strange,” she wrote.

Her comments came after a frustrating opening display by Ronaldo and his teammates, who struggled to break down Congo’s organised defensive structure.

Ronaldo himself was unusually quiet, isolated at times and unable to influence the game in the decisive moments fans have long associated him with.

Portugal’s buildup often slowed in midfield, with possession circulating sideways and backwards rather than progressing with intent.

The lack of urgency in transition stood in contrast to expectations surrounding one of the tournament’s favourites.

Katia’s post quickly divided opinion online.

Some fans echoed her frustration, arguing Portugal looked unconvincing and lacked attacking imagination.

Others felt the reaction was too emotional for an opening group game, insisting there is still time for the team to respond.
