The commercial vehicle reportedly broke down couple of times just before crossing bridges
A Ghanaian driver has recounted a harrowing experience of discovering that a dead baby had been transported in his commercial vehicle during a long-distance journey.
Speaking in an interview with Ahenfo TV, the driver said that while his vehicle was at the station loading passengers for the trip, a woman approached him carrying a baby tightly wrapped in cloth.
According to the woman, she had just returned from the hospital, where doctors had informed her that the child would not survive and there was nothing more they could do.
She said she was taking the baby home, after which the driver asked her to purchase a ticket for the journey.
The driver explained that midway through the trip, as they were about to cross a river via a bridge, the vehicle’s engine suddenly went off for the first time.
Confused by what could have caused the problem, he asked all the passengers to alight from the vehicle. He then attempted to restart the engine, and the vehicle responded.

After crossing the bridge, the passengers reboarded and the journey continued.
He further noted that after the first incident, the vehicle broke down again while approaching another bridge. According to him, the ignition went off for a second time just as they were about to cross.
The driver said that while seated in the vehicle, he suddenly felt compelled to ask the woman whether the baby she claimed was sick was actually alive.
Upon questioning her, the woman reportedly burst into tears. It was then that he informed the other passengers that she was carrying a dead baby.
He explained that, in his belief, the repeated breakdowns occurred because a dead body was being transported in the vehicle.
“Because there was a dead baby in the car, some river deities don’t like that. You have to perform all your rituals before you set off. And anywhere you get to where you’re about to cross a river, you have to honk before you cross,” the driver said.
The driver further stated that when transporting a dead body across a bridge, the driver is expected to honk continuously while crossing.
He added that after realising the woman was carrying a dead baby, he asked passengers if anyone had salt he could use to perform a ritual.
“I asked some of the passengers if they had salt on the bus and they gave me some. Then I went in front of the car, sprinkled salt on the road in front of it, and sprinkled some inside the car too before we continued the journey,” he said.
According to the driver, after performing the ritual with the salt, the vehicle did not break down again for the remainder of the journey.
