UTAG has given gov't up to June 30 to resolve outstanding conditions of service issues
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given the government up to June 30, 2026, to resolve several unresolved conditions-of-service issues and welfare concerns, warning that failure could trigger a nationwide strike.
According to a statement issued by UTAG on Monday, June 22, 2026, the decision was finalised during UTAG’s statutory quarterly meeting held on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
"The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given the government until June 30, 2026, to resolve a range of outstanding conditions-of-service and welfare matters affecting members across Ghana’s public universities.
Here’s why UTAG has threatened to embark on nationwide strike
"The decision was taken at UTAG’s statutory quarterly meeting held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, where the Council reviewed matters relating to member welfare, the governance of the Association, and the advancement of higher education in Ghana," it noted.
UTAG further outlined a series of outstanding grievances that are yet to be addressed by the government.
It appealed to the government to "resolve all post-retirement contract and rollover challenges. Pay the government component of OTSA for research fellows and academic librarians. Facilitate the payment of the university component of OTSA for UESD staff. Settle all outstanding promotion arrears. Facilitate the payment of salary arrears for the affected UniMAC staff and expedite the processing and payment of the 2026 Book and Research Allowance".
UTAG warned that if the outstanding matters are not satisfactorily resolved by June 30, 2026, all branches will, within five working days, begin consultations to secure the necessary mandates from members for "appropriate industrial action."
It reaffirmed its "unwavering commitment to dialogue, negotiation, and constructive engagement".
