Lawyer and activist, Oliver Baker-Vormawor, has questioned arguments seeking to justify former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s continued absence from Ghana amid ongoing investigations.

In a statement shared on social media, Baker-Vormawor argued that there is no indication Ofori-Atta would have been denied bail had he remained in the country.

“Can any single person say that Ken Ofori-Atta would not have gotten bail, if he had stayed?” he wrote, adding that the government has not opposed bail in corruption-related cases associated with investigations under Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

According to him, claims that Ofori-Atta avoided returning to Ghana because of concerns about receiving a fair trial are not supported by the circumstances.

Baker-Vormawor also criticised what he described as a sense of entitlement to immunity from accountability processes established under Ghana’s democratic system.

Drawing comparisons with his own experiences, he recalled remaining in Ghana while facing a treason charge and other security-related challenges.

He said he stayed in the country despite legal restrictions, surveillance, and concerns he believed were connected to his activism.

He noted that these events stemmed from a Facebook post and occurred while he held no government position.

Baker-Vormawor further expressed disagreement with individuals he said were defending Ofori-Atta's actions, arguing that public officials should be subject to accountability mechanisms.

Ultimately, he stated that politicians would be unlikely to support his appointment as Special Prosecutor because of his views on corruption and his commitment to pursuing accountability where necessary.
