Former Head of Monitoring at the Forestry Commission, Reverend Charles Owusu, has challenged assertions that former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori‑Atta, has absconded, insisting that such claims are misleading.
Reacting to ongoing debate on Ofori‑Atta’s residency status in the US on the Kokrokoo Morning Show on June 19, 2026, Owusu asserted that the former minister had openly declared his intention to travel for medical treatment and should not be portrayed as a fugitive.
“What crime has he committed? If there is one, then prosecute him. Even Sedina, who was convicted, was allowed to travel and did not abscond. How much more someone who has not been convicted, yet you insist he has run away,” he said.
Owusu further questioned the government’s silence on the whereabouts of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe, who left the country despite her conviction, contrasting it with their pursuit of Ofori‑Atta.
“He clearly stated he was travelling to receive treatment, so why do we keep saying he has run away? Why is the government silent on Sedina’s whereabouts, yet quick to pursue someone who has not even been charged?” he quizzed.
He also accused the government of selective justice, pointing to several discontinued cases that have drawn little public attention.
“This same government has discontinued several cases without explanation, but no one is talking about it… and yet they continue to call for the extradition of Ken Ofori‑Atta,” he said.
Calls for Ken Ofori-Atta’s extradition from the US and further prosecution follow allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement during his tenure as Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2024.
