Joseph Nelson is the Western Regional Minister
Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has disclosed that a rain-induced landslide caused the fire outbreak on Sunday June 21, 2026, at the Sekondi Fishing Harbour.
According to him, days of continuous rainfall weakened a section of land near the harbour, causing it to collapse onto nearby electrical installations, hence igniting the fire.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the scene on June 22, 2026, Nelson explained that the incident was a natural disaster resulting from the persistent downpour experienced in the region over the past few days.
“This was a natural occurrence because it is a landslide caused by the amount of rain that we have had over the last few days. There has been a constant pouring of rain and that caused that portion of the fishing harbour to come down. When it touched the electrical wires, the fire happened,” he said.

The minister commended personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for their swift response, noting that their timely intervention prevented the blaze from causing more extensive damage.
However, he warned that the threat had not completely passed, as portions of the area remain vulnerable to further landslides due to the ongoing rains.
Nelson revealed that authorities have resolved to evacuate all persons occupying structures along the affected stretch to avoid potential casualties should another collapse occur.
He further called on the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season and report any potential hazards.
