The Minister added that the latest addition to the railway fleet would help lay the foundation
Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced the arrival of two locomotives and 20 freight wagons to support cargo operations across Ghana's railway network as part of efforts to revitalise the country's rail transport sector.
The acquisition forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana's position as a regional transit and logistics hub while reducing the heavy burden placed on the country's road network by cargo trucks.
According to the Minister, the newly acquired rail assets will enhance freight transportation, improve operational efficiency, and provide a more reliable and cost-effective means of moving goods across the country.

"This significant addition to our rail assets marks another important step in our efforts to modernise Ghana's transport infrastructure and strengthen the role of rail in national development," he said.
Nikpe explained that the acquisition forms part of the government's wider strategy to build a modern and integrated transport system capable of driving economic growth, facilitating trade, and improving connectivity for businesses and communities.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to continued investment in the railway sector, stressing that rail transport remains critical to reducing pressure on the country's roads while supporting industrialisation and regional trade.
"As government continues to invest in the railway sector, we remain committed to building an integrated transport system that drives economic growth, facilitates trade, creates jobs, and improves connectivity for businesses and communities," he noted.
The Minister added that the latest addition to the railway fleet would help lay the foundation for a stronger and more resilient transport sector capable of meeting Ghana's growing logistics and freight demands.
"Together, we are laying the foundation for a stronger and more resilient transport sector," he added.
