Some luxury cars at SHS graduations were hired for occasion - Kwadwo Poku

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kwadwo Poku has claimed that some of the luxury cars that featured prominently during recent Senior High School (SHS) graduation celebrations were borrowed specifically for the events and returned afterwards.

The Ministry of Education recently suspended graduation ceremonies after social media videos showed students arriving in expensive vehicles and participating in elaborate celebrations following the completion of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Speaking on JoyNews, Poku alleged that some of the displays were staged purely for appearances.

"Some of the cars were borrowed from car dealers just for show," he said.

"They decorate them with ribbons, parade them at the event, and then return them to the owners."

According to him, such practices contribute to a culture of unhealthy competition among students and parents.

Poku argued that public schools were established on a standardised system designed to minimise social distinctions among students and create a common learning environment.

He noted that recent graduation trends appear to be drifting away from that principle, with celebrations increasingly focused on displays of wealth and social status.
