Dr Julius Garvey honoured with Black Stars jersey by president Mahama

A touching moment of pride and history unfolded as President John Dramani Mahama presented a Black Stars jersey to renowned surgeon Dr Julius Garvey, son of the legendary Pan-Africanist Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

The symbolic gesture celebrated the enduring legacy of Marcus Garvey, whose Black Star philosophy inspired Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, in shaping the nation's identity.

Dr Julius Garvey, 92, received the national team jersey during a meeting with President Mahama, highlighting the deep historical connection between the Garvey movement and Ghana's national symbols.

Marcus Garvey's vision of Black pride, unity and self-determination gave birth to the Black Star emblem, which was later adopted by Dr Nkrumah and featured prominently on Ghana's national flag.

The same symbol also inspired the name of Ghana's senior national football team, the Black Stars.

Presenting the jersey, President Mahama acknowledged the significant contribution of Marcus Garvey's ideals to Ghana's history and identity.
