The CEO of Kantanka Automobile Company, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Kwadwo Safo Kantanka Akofena, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties.

Eight other persons arrested alongside him were also granted bail on the same terms.

The sureties are not required to be justified but must sign a bail justification form as part of the court's conditions.

Adwoa Safo to be flown abroad for treatment after shooting incident - Aide

The accused persons appeared before the court in connection with the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

They have all pleaded not guilty to five charges of; use of an offensive weapon, possession of an offensive weapon, prohibition of vigilante groups, discharging firearms in public, and causing unlawful damage.

Akofena was arrested after reporting himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, June 22, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 22, 2026, the Ghana Police Service said, “The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, also known as Akofena, in connection with the shooting incident involving former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, on June 21, 2026.

“The suspect reported himself to the Regional Police Headquarters on June 22, 2026, and was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations into the incident.”

Police said a search conducted on Akofena's vehicle and residence at Kwabenya led to the retrieval of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, additional loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols, one of which is registered in his name.

The police also announced the arrest of Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson in connection with the incident.

“A search conducted on his vehicle and at his residence in Kwabenya led to the retrieval of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, additional loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols, one of which is registered in his name.

“Further investigations also led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, in connection with the case. All the suspects are currently in Police custody, assisting investigations, and will be put before the court on June 23, 2026,” the statement added.

About the shooting incident

Sarah Adwoa Safo is reported to be receiving medical attention after a shooting incident at Kwabenya on Sunday, June 21, 2026, involving private security personnel and a gathering linked to the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred near a residence connected to the Kristo Asafo leadership succession process, where tensions had reportedly been rising over the appointment of a new leader.

The Ghana Police Service earlier confirmed the arrest of six private security personnel in connection with the incident.

According to the police, weapons, including pump-action shotguns and a loaded pistol, were retrieved during operations, and the suspects were transferred to Police Headquarters to assist with investigations.

Police said preliminary investigations suggest that security personnel on duty responded to a distress call at the residence before the situation escalated into the discharge of firearms.
