The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted a senior officer following his arrest over an alleged attempt to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into a prison at Kete-Krachi.

This was contained in a statement issued by its Public Affairs Department on June 23, 2026.

"The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted No. 8566 Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu following his arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison", it stated.

According to the Service, the incident occurred on June 19, 2026, shortly before the officer was due to begin his night shift.

"During routine security checks conducted by officers on duty before the commencement of the officer's night shift. Through the vigilance and professionalism of the officers, the suspected narcotic substance was detected and retrieved at the prison gate", the statement said.

It further noted that the officer was handed over to the police for investigations.

"The officer was immediately handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigations," it said.

He has since been arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody for two weeks, with the case adjourned to July 8, 2026.

The Ghana Prisons Service stated that, in line with its regulations, the officer has been interdicted pending the outcome of both the criminal trial and internal disciplinary proceedings.
