Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman and current aspirant, Paul Afoko, has denied any involvement in the death of the late Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, who died in a 2015 acid attack.

‎Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Bolgatanga and shared by Channel One TV on June 24, 2026, Afoko described allegations linking him or his family to the incident as unfounded, stressing that both families share a long‑standing relationship.

‎“Our late regional chairman Adams. I can stand here today and tell you that I had no hand in what happened to him. My family had no hand in what happened to him,” Afoko said.

‎He recalled the close ties between the two families, noting that Adams himself had endorsed his bid for national chairman.

‎“His grandmother was given to his grandfather by my grandfather Afoko, the chief of Sandema. The person who signed my forms to go and contest to be national chairman was Adams,” he explained.

‎Afoko lamented what he described as attempts to sow division within the party.

‎“We allowed people to come and play games with us, as if we are fools. People play games with us,” he said.

‎“The thing that then brought our problem, and it shouldn’t have been a problem, was me coming up with a new part of my new plan for power which said that we will break the 8,” Afoko added.

‎The former chairman urged reconciliation and unity within the NPP, calling on members to put aside internal disputes and focus on strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
