Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Dr Adam Bonaa, has advised licensed firearm owners to refrain from publicly disclosing that they possess weapons.

Speaking during a discussion on TV3 regarding the shooting incident involving former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo, Dr Bonaa addressed comments made by a panelist who had indicated that he owned a firearm.

“You are not supposed to say it publicly. It is not safe for you to say it,” Dr Bonaa stated.

According to him, publicly declaring firearm ownership could expose individuals to additional security risks and undermine one of the key advantages of possessing a firearm for self-defence.

“The element of surprise is a reason why these firearms exist. If you tell the whole world that you have a firearm, criminals will prepare differently when they come after you,” he explained.

Dr Bonaa warned that criminals who are aware of an individual's firearm ownership may respond with greater force or sophistication.

“If they were coming at you with one weapon, they will come with 12. They won’t wait,” he said.

While acknowledging that legally owning a firearm is permissible, he stressed the need for discretion and responsible conduct among licensed gun owners.

“Those who have weapons legally, please be mindful. Don’t even show it,” he advised.

Dr Bonaa's comments come amid renewed public discussions on firearm ownership, personal security and gun regulations following the recent shooting incident involving the former lawmaker.
