Benjamin Asare has etched his name into Ghana’s World Cup history books after becoming the only goalkeeper to record back-to-back clean sheets for the Black Stars at the tournament, following another composed display in the goalless draw against England on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

The shot-stopper, who was introduced into the starting role after replacing Lawrence Ati-Zigi during the opening match, has seized his opportunity remarkably.

He kept his first clean sheet in Ghana’s 1-0 win over Panama before repeating the feat against England, a result that underlined the Black Stars’ growing defensive discipline on the global stage.

Asare’s achievement now places him in a unique position in Ghana’s World Cup goalkeeping history.

He becomes the only Ghanaian goalkeeper to register consecutive clean sheets at the tournament, a feat no other shot-stopper has managed since the country’s World Cup journey began in 2006.

Richard Kingson, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s finest World Cup goalkeepers, remains the only other Ghanaian to have recorded two clean sheets at the tournament.

Kingson first achieved the milestone in the 2006 group stage against the Czech Republic before adding another in the 2010 opener against Serbia.

However, those clean sheets were separated by four years and different tournaments.

Since that 2010 victory over Serbia, Ghana had gone through a difficult run at the World Cup, conceding in every match across subsequent editions.

From the remainder of the 2010 campaign, where goals were shipped against Australia, Germany, the United States and Uruguay, to the 2014 and 2022 tournaments where the Black Stars failed to keep a single clean sheet, defensive stability had been a long-standing issue.

That trend has now been broken by Asare’s emergence between the posts in 2026.

His calmness, positioning, and shot-stopping ability have provided Ghana with a newfound sense of assurance at the back, helping the team grind out results in tight matches.
