The government, through the Ministry of the Interior, has declared Friday, July 3, 2026, a public holiday.

According to a statement issued by the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the holiday is to mark Republic Day, which is celebrated every July 1.

The ministry explained that even though this year’s Republic Day falls on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, it would be commemorated on Friday in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601).

“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, July 1, 2026, marks Republic Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday.

“However, in view of the fact that July 1, 2026, falls on a Wednesday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has, by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended, declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.

Act 601 mandates that all holidays that fall on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday be shifted to Friday.

Statutory public holidays which fall on the weekend are to be observed on the following Monday.

The government explained that the amendments are to allow businesses and employees to maintain workflow by avoiding mid-week disruptions.

However, religious holidays (such as Eid Ul Adha, Eid Ul Fitr, and Christmas) will not be affected by this adjustment. Religious holidays will continue to be observed on their actual dates, regardless of the day of the week.
