A mental health doctor has suggested that certain prophecies made by some religious leaders may raise questions about underlying mental health conditions, particularly where unusual beliefs or perceptions are involved.
Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, the doctor explained that some mental health disorders can affect the way individuals perceive reality and interact with others.
“We have a mental illness called schizophrenia, and there are about four types,” the doctor stated.
According to the doctor, one form of the condition, known as paranoid schizophrenia, can cause individuals to become highly suspicious of others and perceive threats where none may exist.
“There is one particular type that we call paranoid schizophrenia. Such individuals may not necessarily be found outside frequently but rather remain at home.
They often think that everyone hates them and may isolate themselves,” the doctor explained.
The doctor further noted that individuals experiencing severe symptoms may believe that others pose a threat to them, which can influence their actions and behaviour.“
Because they see everyone as a threat, they can sometimes harm others because the voices in their head may make them do so,” the doctor said.
Commenting on some prophetic declarations that receive public attention, the doctor suggested that certain cases may warrant closer examination from a mental health perspective.
“These prophecies that we get to hear, some may be linked to such conditions, but we cannot say much about them without proper assessment,” the doctor added.
