President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of Phase II of the Sentuo Oil Refinery, describing the project as a major step towards Ghana's industrialisation agenda and efforts to strengthen the country's energy security.

The expansion project will increase the refinery's processing capacity from 40,000 barrels per day to 100,000 barrels per day upon completion while creating thousands of jobs and boosting local value addition in the petroleum sector.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, June 25, 2026, President Mahama reaffirmed his government's commitment to building a resilient economy driven by industrial growth rather than the export of raw materials.

"This expansion reflects our unwavering commitment to industrialisation, energy security and value addition. By increasing the refinery's capacity to 100,000 barrels per day, we are laying the foundation for a stronger and more self-reliant economy," he said while speaking at the event on June 25, 2026, in Tema.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana's long-term development strategy is focused on processing its natural resources locally to maximise economic benefits and create sustainable employment opportunities.

"Our vision is clear. Ghana must move beyond exporting raw materials to becoming a nation that processes, manufactures and creates value within its own borders. That is how we build a resilient economy and deliver lasting prosperity for our people," he added.

President Mahama further noted that the project is expected to generate thousands of jobs during and after construction while strengthening the country's energy independence.

"The Sentuo Refinery expansion will not only create employment opportunities for Ghanaians but will also enhance our energy security, support industrial growth and contribute significantly to our broader economic transformation agenda," he said.

The Phase II expansion of the Sentuo Oil Refinery is expected to reduce Ghana's reliance on imported refined petroleum products and reinforce the country's position as a key player in the sub-regional energy industry.
