President John Mahama has inspected a newly completed Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Ohiaba in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region and presented free primary healthcare kits to strengthen healthcare delivery. The initiative forms part of government’s efforts to expand access to quality healthcare, particularly in underserved rural communities.

The Ohiaba CHPS compound is among new community health facilities being constructed under government’s policy for every district assembly to build two CHPS compounds annually to enhance access to primary healthcare.

The facility has been fitted with delivery beds, consulting rooms, diagnostic equipment and essential medical supplies to support maternal and child health services, disease screening and basic primary care.

The facility also received free primary healthcare kits, including tricycles, motorcycles and other logistics, to improve outreach and service delivery.

Minister of State for Government Communications and Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, was present during the inspection.

President Mahama noted that although about 60 percent of Ghanaians are covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme, government is focusing on the remaining 40 percent who are either uninsured or suffer from conditions not fully covered under the scheme.

He said government has allocated GH¢2.9 billion this year to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, to support patients battling conditions such as cancer, kidney failure and diabetes.

President Mahama explained that the expansion of CHPS compounds nationwide, coupled with adequate equipment and logistics, will ensure residents in remote communities have access to healthcare closer to their doorsteps.

He urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme by undergoing routine medical screening at least once a year, stressing that early detection of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes can prevent serious complications and save lives.

The President commended health workers at the Ohiaba CHPS compound for their dedication and reaffirmed government’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage through improved healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.
