Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP
An Accra High Court has adjourned the case involving Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and two others in the Samreboi illegal mining matter to July 20, 2026.
The decision follows submissions by both the defence and the prosecution during proceedings.
The court granted the lawyers for the accused persons more time to file their written address before judgement is delivered.
“The Court after listening to Counsel for the accused and the Prosecution, has granted an extension of time from today, to the 13th of July for Counsel for the accused to file any written address he may have,” sources close to GhanaWeb stated.
Following this, the court set a new date to deliver its ruling in the case.
“Consequently, the Court has set a new date, 20th of July 2026 at 9 o’clock in the forenoon to deliver its judgement,” the report added.
Background
The application was filed by Samuel Atta Akyea who prayed the Court to defer judgment in order to allow him to acquaint himself with all the proceedings.
The High Court in Accra had fixed July 3, 2026, for judgment in the case in which Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining are facing charges, including assignment of mineral rights without authorisation.
Earlier, the Court had directed that the parties file their final closing addresses by June 17, 2026, which was subsequently revised to June 24, 2026, while the judgment date remained July 3, 2026.
On June 17 after the High Court dismissed his application for withdrawal, his previous lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, withdrew his legal services for Wontumi despite leading him to close his case.
Following the withdrawal of his lawyer, Chairman Wontumi appointed Samuel Atta Akyea as the new lawyer, and the new counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, is asking the Court for time to peruse the court proceedings.
