A file photo of a large sections of the refinery submerged in floodwaters
Videos circulating on social media platform X have shown extensive flooding at the Sentuo Oil Refinery near the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) in Tema following Monday’s heavy rains that battered parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The footage, widely shared by CDR Africa on X, shows large sections of the refinery submerged in floodwaters, with water covering access roads and surrounding parts of the facility. The extent of the damage has not yet been officially confirmed.
The videos have sparked public concern, with many users describing the situation as alarming and calling on authorities to assess the impact of the flooding on the refinery and nearby communities.
Accra grinds to a halt as floods submerge roads, disrupt electricity supply
The flooding at the refinery comes as torrential rains left several parts of Accra and Tema underwater, disrupting traffic, inundating homes and businesses, and leaving many commuters stranded during Monday’s rush hour.
Several communities, including Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Alajo, Dzorwulu, Spintex, Tesano, and parts of Tema, were affected by the downpour, while emergency response teams were deployed to assist residents in flood-hit areas.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the condition of the Sentuo Oil Refinery or indicate whether operations at the facility have been affected by the floods.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that more rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours, while disaster management officials continue to urge residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid flooded roads, and move to safer locations where necessary.
