The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has officially launched the 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration, outlining the government’s vision of strengthening agriculture as the foundation for Ghana’s food security, economic growth and long-term national development.

In a statement shared on social media on June 30, 2026, the minister announced that this year’s celebration will be held under the theme, “Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future,” which he described as a reflection of the essential role farmers play in sustaining the country.

According to Eric Opoku, the theme underlines the direct connection between agricultural production, food security and national prosperity, stressing that Ghana’s future depends heavily on the success and welfare of its farmers.

“I officially launched the 42nd National Farmers' Day celebration under the theme, ‘Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future,’ powerfully encapsulating the interconnectedness of agricultural producers, food security and national prosperity.

“This theme signifies that the future of Ghana is inextricably linked to the strength and support of its farmers, emphasising that investing in agriculture today secures the nation's food and people for tomorrow,” he wrote.

He explained that investing in agriculture today is an investment in the country’s future, as a strong agricultural sector guarantees a stable food supply, creates employment opportunities, supports rural livelihoods and contributes significantly to economic growth.

The minister further indicated that the 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration will take place on Friday, December 4, 2026, and will be preceded by a week-long series of activities designed to showcase Ghana’s agricultural achievements and innovations.

Among the key events is the National Agricultural Fair, scheduled to run from November 30 to December 4, 2026. The fair is expected to bring together farmers, agribusinesses, researchers, agricultural institutions, policymakers and other stakeholders to exhibit modern farming technologies, promote agricultural products and encourage investment across the sector.

The week-long celebration will culminate in the Grand Durbar and National Awards Ceremony, where outstanding farmers and key contributors to Ghana’s agricultural industry will be honoured for their achievements and dedication to improving food production.

Eric Opoku said the annual celebration goes beyond recognising hardworking farmers, describing it as an important reminder of agriculture’s central role in national development.

He cautioned that neglecting the agricultural sector would undermine Ghana’s development ambitions, arguing that the country’s path to self-sufficiency depends on building a resilient and productive agricultural system capable of feeding the population and supporting economic transformation.

The minister concluded his message by expressing optimism about the future of Ghana’s agricultural sector and offered prayers for the nation and its farming community, stating, “God bless our Homeland Ghana. God bless our hardworking farmers.”

National Farmers’ Day is observed annually to celebrate the contributions of Ghanaian farmers and fishers to the country’s economy while encouraging greater investment and innovation in agriculture.
