A man has died after returning to his flooded home to retrieve belongings moments after rescuing his family from rising floodwaters at Kpometey (also known as Freetown) in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mustapha Mohammed, confirmed the incident in an interview on Channel One TV on June 30, 2026, describing it as the only flood-related death he could verify within his electoral area.
He explained that after ensuring his family's safety, the man reportedly returned to the house to retrieve an item from a wardrobe.

According to the Assembly Member, the deceased had successfully evacuated his family, including his wives and children, from their home after they became trapped by floodwaters.
"I learnt he was able to rescue all his family members and move them out after they were trapped by the flood. But according to what I was told, he went back to take something from the wardrobe. Unfortunately, the wardrobe fell on him, and that was it. He wasn't able to help himself," Mohammed recounted.
The tragic incident occurred as heavy rains caused flooding in several parts of the country, leaving many residents displaced and forcing several households to seek temporary shelter.
