The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has averred that the 24-Hour Economy could stumble if the government revives economic policies reminiscent of the 1980s.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme, he recalled how similar measures decades ago crippled the manufacturing sector, shuttered factories, and threw thousands out of work.

Koomson cautioned that repeating those mistakes would derail the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s vision of round-the-clock productivity and job creation.

“If care is not taken, the unfavourable economic policies which collapsed the manufacturing industries and caused massive job losses in the 80s will resurface to undermine the 24-hour economy being pursued by the NDC government,” he warned.

Koomson noted that the Ghana Federation of Labour’s recent meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries was aimed at tackling nuisance taxes such as the fumigation service charge on containers, the Import Declaration Form levy, and the proposed cargo levy, which he said should be eliminated.

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour explained that these taxes inflate costs and weaken the competitiveness of local industries.

He stated that for the 24-Hour Economy to truly deliver on its promise, the government must build a climate where industries can thrive.
