John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana
President John Dramani Mahama began his speech at the 2026 National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving with a rendition of a popular Christian hymn, "There Shall Be Showers of Blessing", before offering a prayer for God's mercy, protection and favour over the country.
Addressing the gathering on July 1, 2026, the president said the hymn reflected what he believed God was doing for the country.
After singing a verse of the hymn, he thanked God for His protection and mercy, expressing hope that the nation would continue to enjoy divine guidance and "exceptional favour".

"There shall be showers of blessing. This is the promise of love.... We thank God for this day. We thank Him for His protection. We thank Him for His mercy on all of us and on our country. And may He continue to have mercy on us. And may He continue to grant Ghana exceptional favour", he stated.
The president also used the occasion to emphasise that national development cannot be achieved through prayer alone.
He noted that Ghana's aspirations for growth and transformation could only be realised through a combination of faith and purposeful action.
He called on every citizen to go beyond prayers by demonstrating commitment, diligence, and discipline in their daily lives and workplaces.
Drawing from Scripture, Mahama quoted James 2:26, "Faith without works is dead" – and declared that prayer without responsibility cannot transform an economy, and hope without discipline cannot create prosperity.
He also made reference to leaders in the bible who combined prayer with practical effort, noting that Nehemiah prayed but also labored to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and that Joseph sought God's wisdom but also planned wisely to prepare Egypt for famine.
"Throughout history, God's people have always combined faith with hard work," Mahama said, urging Ghanaians to adopt the same mindset in building a prosperous nation.
Ghana observes its National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving annually on July 1, the date that historically commemorates Republic Day.
It was officially designated by President Mahama as an interfaith, non-partisan day for collective reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal.
