Late former President Rawlings (L) and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (R)
An old video showing a light-hearted exchange between the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Ghana's late former president, Jerry John Rawlings, has resurfaced on social media.
The video captures the two leaders seated side by side during the Asantehene's visit to Rawlings at Osu Castle in 1999. Also present were members of the Asantehene's entourage, including traditional leaders and kinsmen, who listened as the two engaged in a friendly conversation.
How Otumfuo is related to the Rawlings’
During the interaction, the Asantehene joked that Rawlings had become part of the Ashanti royal family after marrying his relative, a reference to Rawlings' late wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who is of Ashanti descent and a member of the Royal Family.
Agyeman-Rawlings is said to be a cousin of Otumfuo, who made Rawlings a cousin-in-law to the Asantehene.
Speaking in Twi, Otumfuo said Rawlings had automatically become family because of the marriage.
Why Rawlings was barred from Burma Camp under Kufuor
Rawlings responded in the same language, saying he had also brought the Asantehene into his own home in Anlo through the marriage.
His response drew laughter from those gathered, with the atmosphere becoming even more cheerful as the two continued their conversation.
