Police intercept 50,000 rounds of ammunition, arrest three

The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted a commercial vehicle transporting 50,000 rounds of ammunition through an unapproved route outside Wa, leading to the arrest of three suspects.

According to a statement issued by the Command on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the operation was carried out on Monday, June 29, 2026 when officers intercepted the vehicle travelling along an unapproved route.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 200 boxes of AA cartridges, amounting to 50,000 rounds of ammunition, concealed beneath other goods.

The Police identified the suspects as Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood and Alhaji Issahaku. They are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

"The suspects are in custody and efforts are ongoing to establish the source of the ammunitions and arrest any other persons who may be involved," the statement said.

The Regional Police Command praised the officers who carried out the operation, stating that it "commends the professionalism and integrity of the officers involved in the operation."

It also assured residents of the Upper West Region of its commitment to maintaining security and protecting lives and property.

"The Command also wishes to assure residents of the Upper West Region that it remains committed to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for all law-abiding citizens," the statement added.

The Police further appealed to the public to support law enforcement efforts by volunteering credible information to help combat crime.

"Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and credible information to help combat crime and safeguard our communities," the statement said.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the ammunition, as police work to identify any additional suspects connected to the case.
